Innovation Details

Forest fires effect communities of people and ecosystems throughout the world. As a result of climate change, some areas are experiencing more frequent forest fires. It is important that we develop natural ways to protect people and their property. This project uses the properties of three organisms (spiders, hagfish, and broom bush plants) to help protect forested areas surrounding homes during forest fires. The team has made strands of pods (almost like Christmas tree lights) that collect, absorb, and store water for release when exposed to extreme heat.
