Nature uses smart materials that respond to cues such as moisture or temperature. Nature also uses self-assembly, where structure and functionality emerge on their own. Imagine having one pair of shoes or one shirt that changes throughout the day as your needs or the weather changes. Imagine having room dividers, chairs, even buildings that self-assemble. The combination of this short video and an exploration of the MIT Self-Assembly Lab’s website reveals to students the possibilities for new ways to make materials and objects in our lives.
